St.Petersburg
- Area: 1400 km2.
- Population: 4.8 million inhabitants.
- Resources: the largest industrial, financial, commercial, scientific, cultural and tourist centre in the Russian Federation after Moscow. Transportation network: the largest national strategic port for import/export. The railway network, the road system, the waterways (rivers and lakes), air transport (national and international) are all very efficient. St.Petersburg is internationally recognised as a scientific and cultural centre with 390 research and engineering companies; 40 universities and higher education institutes; 17 Academy of Science research centres; 50 museums; 40 theatres and concert halls.
- Economy: Production of: energy (electric and calorific); high technology; electronics. Manufacturing: transport equipment; capital equipment; machine tools and ship building.
- Industries: metallurgy; chemicals, textiles, food-processing; consumer goods (textiles and clothing).

The District of Leningrad
- Area: 0.09 million km2.
- Population: 1.7 million inhabitants (28 towns, 39 industrial centres and 3167 villages);
- Resources: Natural: wood (10 million m3 usable annually); minerals: gold, building materials, oil shale; logistics network: railways, roads, waterways (lakes and rivers). One of North West Russia’s largest ports is at Vyborg.
Out of the 89 other regions in the Russian Federation, the district of Leningrad is the one most favoured by American investors.
-Tourism: castles, 14th & 15th century churches and historic old Russian and Swedish towns and fortresses.
- Economy: Industries: forestry; metallurgy; food processing; oil; high technology; production of wood pulp; paper; machine tools; energy (electric and calorific); consumer goods; mining. Agriculture: cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing; crops (barley, oats, potatoes, vegetables).

The Republic of Karelia
- Area: 0.18 million km2 (of which 50% is forest and 18% lakes).
- Population: 0.8 million inhabitants; capital - Petrozavodsk (0.3 million inhabitants), 74% of the population is urban.
- Resources: Natural : wood (50% of the district, 830 million m3 in total, 8 million m3 usable annually); there are over 50 minerals in some 400 deposits: iron, chromium, titanium, gold, platinum, vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, copper, aluminium, zinc, lead, copper, diamonds, quartz, shungite, bauxite, mica, oil, feldspar, talc, graphite, granite, marble and building materials.
Transportation network: railways (3000 km), routs (14400 km), waterways (rivers, lakes- 2700 km), air transport (local - 2700 km and international).
- Tourism: churches; 16th and 17th century Russian Orthodox monasteries; nature: forests, lakes, rivers, waterways (lakes, rivers and locks) connecting the Baltic sea with the White Sea.
- Economy: Industries: forestry, metallurgy, mining, fishing, production of wood pulp and paper, the manufacture of machines and furniture making. Agriculture: cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing, the fur trade, crops (potatoes and green vegetables).

The District of Murmansk
- Area: 0.15 million km2.
- Population: 1.1 million inhabitants; capital - Mourmansk, 92% of the population is urban.
- Resources: Natural: there are some 30 minerals in more than 60 usable deposits : oil, natural gas (the Schtokmann field has 3 trillion m3), iron, titanium, aluminium, phosphorus, copper, nickel, zirconium, bauxite, rare and precious metals, building materials, granite, 23000 hectares of usable agricultural land. Transportation network :railways (1012 km), roads (4160 km), waterways (port of Murmansk), air transport (local and international)
- Economy: Industries : exploitation of natural resources (phosphorus, nickel, iron ore, copper), iron and steel manufacturing (31%), food-processing and fish (20%) , chemicals, energy production: electric and calorific (20%) and fertilizer. Agriculture: cattle breeding and rearing, crops.

The District of Novgorod
- Area: 0.06 million km2.
- Population: 0.74 million inhabitants (96% Russian); capital - Novgorod (0.24 million), 70% of the population lives in 10 cities.
- Resources: Natural: wood (12 million m3 usable annually), peat, building materials, diamonds, oil, natural gas. Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (rivers and lakes), air transport (local).
There are 4 free-trade areas and 197 joint ventures (foreign capital).
Out of the other 89 Districts in the Russian Federation, the District of Novgorod was recognized, in 1998, by the American Chamber of Commerce as Regional Leader. Tourism: Novgorod, churches, Russian Orthodox monasteries, 11th and 12th century Russian towns.
- Economy: Industries: electronics, communications equipment, chemicals, food-processing, capital equipment, high technology equipment, energy production: electric and calorific. The District of Pskov
- Area: 0.06 million km2 (forests - 40%, agricultural land - 30%, lakes - 2100 km2).
- Population: 0.83 million inhabitants (94% Russian; capital - Pskov (0.2 million inhabitants).
Resources: Natural: forests (2.5 million hectares, 230 million m3 in total, 3.5 million m3 usable annually), peat (300 million tonnes), diamonds, fishing (lakes an drivers - 8000 tonnes allowed annually). Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (rivers and lakes), air transport (local). Tourism: Pskov, churches, Orthodox monasteries, 14th to 16th century Russian towns.
- Economy: Industries: food-processing, metallurgy, manufacture of machine tools (15000 companies). Agriculture: Cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing, crops (barley, oats, potatoes, vegetables and long staple linen).

The District of Vologda
- Area: 0.15 million km2.
- Population: 1.4 million inhabitants (90%Russian); capital -Vologda (0.3 million), 67% of the population is urban.
- Resources: Natural: forests, agricultural land. Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (rivers and lakes), air transport (local). Tourism: Russian " wood " 15th to 18th century architecture, Orthodox masteries.
- Economy: Industries: iron and steel manufacturing (59%), fertilizers (12%), forestry, textiles, food-processing (high quality dairy products), energy production: electric and calorific, mechanical equipment, construction and consumer goods (300 companies). The District of Archangel
- Area: 0.35 million km2.
- Population: 1.52 million inhabitants (92% Russian); capital - Archangel (0.4 million), 74% of the population live in 14 major cities.
- Resources: Natural : wood (0.23 million km2, 1.58 billion m3), oil, natural gas, coal, peat, bauxite, oil shale, diamonds, copper, manganese, zinc, lead. Transportation network: railways (1800 km), roads (5340 km), waterways (local and international),
air transportation: (local and international). Tourism: 15th to 18th century Russian "wood" architecture, Russian Orthodox monasteries, nature: lakes, rivers and the White Sea.
- Economy: Industries: forestry, fishing, wood pulp (35% of the total Russian output), paper, machines, mining, building materials (300 companies). Agriculture: cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing, crops (potatoes and vegetables).

The District of Kaliningrad (an enclave between Poland and the Baltic States)
- Area: 0.015 million km2.
- Population: 0.93 million (78% Russian); capital - Kaliningrad (0.42 million), 80% of the population is urban.
- Resources: Natural: amber (90% of world resources), oil, peat, titanium and zirconium. Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (Kaliningrad is the only Russian port that never freezes over), air transport (local and international).
It is a free-trade area with three Russian strategic ports: (Kaliningrad, Baltiisk, Pionersky);
- Economy: Industries: deep sea fishing (300 fishing boats), jam production, capital equipment, transport materials and machine tools (31 companies), wood pulp (4 companies), energy production: electric and calorific, furniture making (a total of 180 companies). Agriculture: cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing, crops (potatoes and vegetables).

The District of Kirov
- Area: 0.12 million km2 (forests - 53%, agricultural land - 27 %).
- Population: 1.6 million; capital - Kirov (80% of the population is urban).
- Resources: Natural: wood (12.6 million m3 usable annually), the largest deposits of phosphorus in Europe (2 billion tonnes), iron deposits, copper, oil, peat, oil shale. Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (rivers and lakes), air transport: local. Tourism: lakes and rivers.
- Economy: Industries: forestry, chemicals, metallurgy, food-processing, manufacture of machine tools, energy production: electric and calorific (22000 companies). Agriculture: cattle, pig and poultry breeding and rearing, crops (barley, oats, potatoes, vegetables, long staple linen, production of meat, milk and milk products).

The Republic of Komi
- Area: 0.42 million km2 (forests - 65%).
- Population: 1.2 million; capital - Syktyvkar (0.23 million), 65% of the population is urban.
- Resources: Natural: oil (50% of the total Russian reserves), natural gas (33% of the total Russian reserves) wood (50% of the northern Russian resources). Transportation network: railways, roads, waterways (rivers), air transport (local and international) Economy: Industries: forestry, wood pulp, paper, fuel production, energy production: electric and calorific.
