OK, I had switched off CNBC, the Dow, S&P, Nasdaq,
FTSE and Tootsie. The shares of major conglomerates
were valued at peanuts even when they have strong balance
sheets - really, how depressing for the CEOs and shareholders!
But this week there is a glimmer of hope, so I'm switched
on again, and I believe this will be a positive year
for the bold. In spite of the doom and gloom, and especially
with bank interest rates on the floor and little credit
around, it is encouraging to see there are still investors
out there looking for good projects with real growth
value. We also see that there is an underlying confidence
that the medium-sized businesses will emerge as the
drivers of growth as long as they can manage their treasury
requirements. In Russia/CIS, the regions are moving forwards,
and we have good construction and industrial companies
responding to real development requirements and real
orders. There is pain in the banking sector, but it
will sort out the men from the boys and the banking
sector will emerge in much better shape, so don't believe
all you read in the press. For our clients from these active but not sophisticated
regions searching for their financial partners, we have
created a first Roadmap to give them a snapshot
of what will be expected en route to their project investment
requirements. This is followed up by a document hit-list
to prepare for the fray!
